The LONGEST Time-out EVER

Today marked the end of the longest time-out Miles has ever endured.  He went a week without touchscreens or computers.  Last Saturday we were out doing errands and Miles wanted to go see the "Big Missionary."  The "Big Missionary" is this hideous inflatable LDS missionary standing atop the Missionary Mall store in Orem.  We'd driven by it once already, and I told Miles that we could go by it again, but not until I'd taken care of A-B-C-D-E first.  That was not acceptable to Miles as he wanted to see the missionary "NOW" and take a "movie" of it, so he started throwing an impressive tantrum.  He was strapped in his carseat, but that wasn't to deter him from throwing his awesome fit.  He screamed and yelled and hollered about wanting to see "the missionary".  Then he started kicking the center console of my car.  I wish there was a better descriptive word to use than "kicking" because "kicking" sounds like such a tame way to describe what Miles was doing with his feet.  I told him to stop or he'd loose iPod/iPad/iPhone/computer privileges until Sunday, then Monday, then Tuesday, then I told him it'd be a week... until next Saturday (or today).  Wow.  That finally got his attention and he stopped trying to pulverize my car with his feet.  Unfortunately, it didn't change his attitude towards me as for the next hour, he tried to hit or kick me as often as possible and continue on with the screaming portion of his tantrum.  Nothing was going to calm him down,  not even the donuts I'd bought.  DI was on the visit list for the day, and Miles wasn't even interested in choosing a toy (which is standard practice).  He was behaving monster-ish in DI demanding the donuts he'd rejected, telling me that he wants "no toy", etc.  I was doing my best to ignore him.  Then Miles wanted to go "over there" to the place where DI sells the "big and weird" stuff. Of course from across the "yard sale" area, yards and yards away from the far side of the east wall, Miles spotted the item that he had to have; the item that would transform him from Monster Miles back into Marvelous Miles; the ultimate object of his desire.  So I bought it.

Yep, Miles is now the happiest owner ever of an 8 foot tall inflatable polar bear that lights up.  Lucky him.  Sucker me.  He thinks it's going to go in our front yard at Christmas.  I told him it could go on the back deck.  He thinks it's awesome that he is small enough to fit inside the bear.

So, the electronics time-out.  Today marked the end of the time out.  First words out of Miles' mouth this morning were "I can play iPod!"  He's happily having a shark eat other sea life, having an ancient temple pilferer running for his life from possessed monkeys, and  working on his bowling skills.  It was a good break for Miles, and has me thinking about instituting a "Time-out Tuesday" policy.  Miles discovered hole punches this week and has been busy making confetti, reading books, writing, playing outside, and watching a bit of TV.  The one thing he didn't do was play with toys.  He's never liked toys, and that was more apparent than ever this week when he refused to play with any.  DI here they come!

Hey Mom, This one is for YOU!

Make this, mom.  Tastes so good!

White Chocolate Lemon Poppyseed Blondies

  • Melt 4 Tbsp Butter in the microwave
  • Add 3/4 C White Chocolate Chips to the butter.  Let sit for a minute, then stir until smooth (microwave a bit more, if necessary)
  • In a bowl, combine 1 C Flour, 1/2 C Sugar, 1/2 C White Chocolate Chips, 1/2 tsp Salt, 1/2 tsp Baking Powder.
  • Stir in the melted butter/white chocolate
  • Add 2 Eggs, 1/4 C Lemon Curd, 2 Tbsp Poppyseeds
  • Pour into lined 8x8 dish (or just spray), bake at 350 for 30-35 minutes
My opinions...
  • I'd love the lemon to stand out more, so I'd increase the lemon curd or maybe add some lemon juice
  • Too many poppyseeds!
  • I hate these warm.  They are much better on day two (and really good for breakfast)

Staying on the theme of Concerts...

Nolan's last ever junior high band concert was last night!!! Isn't he the cutest trumpet guy ever?

Yes, I'm a bit excited about not having to hear junior high bands perform again for a long, long time. Nolan played lots... percussion, concert, and jazz bands.  Here's the percussion group playing on garbage cans...

And then the Symphonic Band played "Semper Fidelis."  Nolan essentially played a trumpet solo.

And the concert ended with the Jazz Band playing "Honk."  I recommend skipping to about the 3:00 mark and just listening to Nolan's solo.

And with that, Nolan's junior high band career is over!

About That Concert

So that concert that Nolan attended on his birthday... Jonathan had the "opportunity" to play in the University Campus Symphony with Dan.  Since Dan is a adjunct professor at the U, he was allowed to invade the orchestra (as the principal second violin).  Dan joined midway through the Spring semester.  Well, the concert was on Nolan's birthday, which was also a school night so getting a babysitter to stay until 11:30 p.m. or so wasn't an option.  I gave Nolan the option of attending the concert or babysitting Miles.  He chose to go to the concert.  I must admit that I was a bit jealous because after all the hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours of practicing I had to listen to, I'd like to have heard the final product, but since it was Nolan's birthday that was being invaded by the concert, I let him choose, but told him that he had to record the concert.  Below is the University Campus Symphony playing 2 movements of Smetana's Ma Vlast... Vysehrad and Vltava (the Czechs need to learn how to spell).

Happy Birthday, Rocker!

Nolan turned 15 clear back in April.  It was an insanely busy day... school, music lessons, lacrosse, mutual, and a concert at the University of Utah.  Obviously he couldn't fit all that into his schedule, so he had to pick and choose his extracurricular activities.  Nolan went to school, then buzzed by home for a few minutes, then headed to his trumpet lesson, afterward we made a mad dash to Smashburger for dinner.  What a crazy day.  There wasn't even time for birthday cake (which I promised him I'd make the next day, then forgot!  Bad Mom!)

then I ran him up to the U for Jonathan and Dan's concert (which will get a blog post of its own), then a visit to U-gurt to get a birthday treat and a present from Jonathan (the book Wake Me for the Resurrection).

So, what does a 15 year old get for his birthday?  Well, he got new lacrosse underwear and cups!!!

He got Si-cology (think Duck Dynasty),
a belt, a waterbottle, and a tent.

A side note to Nolan's birthday... Miles, Nolan, and I went to the Smashburger in Draper for Nolan's birthday dinner.  After we finished eating, I looked at my watch and minorly panicked because I realized that I had to have Nolan up to the U in 35 minutes.  We ran out to the car and headed to the U.  We were maybe 5 blocks from Smashburger when Miles announced that he needed to go to the bathroom.  There wasn't time for a stop to accommodate Miles' bladder.  I figured that he could just hold it.  Well he complained and did a wiggle dance all the way to the U.  Several times he told us that he'd peed his pants (which was a happy lie).  My plan was to park in President's Circle and take Miles into a building so he could take care of his business.  There wasn't any parking available on the Circle, and I could tell that Miles was about to explode.  I pulled into the campus shuttle zone and told Nolan to get out and go to the concert.  I unbuckled Miles from his car seat and grabbed the Smashburger cup that still had ice in it, and told Miles to go in the cup.  He did.  He went and went and went, and when he was finally done, he looked in the cup and proudly said, "I melted all the ice!"  Too funny!

"Heart Attack in a Pot" Revisited

FYI- the pasta that I made yesterday was even better today.  Here's to another night of heartburn!

"BYU Victory Pasta"

Oh, Hi Blog.  No, I haven't abandoned you, I just "haven't been in the mood" to visit you, but don't worry, I have a backlog list of "stuff" to get on here soon enough.

A couple of weeks ago, Nolan ate "BYU Victory Pasta" at a lacrosse team dinner.  He thought it was awesome, and was sorely disappointed that when he went back for seconds; it was all gone.  Tomorrow Nolan takes his first ever AP test.  To pump him up for his test, I decided to make him that pasta dish for dinner.  It's really good... amazingly good, so I'm posting it here so I don't lose the recipe.

Warning... pay attention to how much the recipe makes.  I kinda ignored that and now have more leftovers than will ever be consumed; consider making a quarter of the recipe or less.  Also, I'm thinking the recipe needs to be re-titled.  I'm considering 2 options... "Nolan's Favorite", or "Heart Attack in a Pot".

BYU Victory Pasta
In a crockpot, cook 6 Chicken Breasts in 2 (12 oz) bottles Lawry's Mesquite Marinade with Lime Juice (I don't know how essential this specific brand is to the recipe, but let me tell you, it's so good!). Cook on low for 6 hours or so
Cut chicken into bite sized pieces, then return it to the crockpot to keep it warm (don't dump out the marinade stuff yet)

Cook 2.5 pounds of bacon until crispy (I used 24 oz and that was still a ton), break it up into small pieces.

In an 8 qt stockpot, boil 2 (16 oz) bags of Farfalle pasta (you know, the bowties) to al dente.  Scoop the  chicken from the crockpot (let it be all marinade gooey) and add it to the pasta.

In a 3 quart pot, add 3 C Cream, 2 Tbsp garlic, 1 1/2 Tbsp black pepper, 1.5 C butter, the bacon, and 1.5 C grated Parmesan cheese.  Heat the stuff until everything is melted; don't let it boil, then pour it over the chicken/pasta and stir thoroughly.

Eat as much of it as you can.  Serve with a side of Zocor or Lipitor.  So good.  So bad for you.

A few thoughts...

  • I'm not the biggest fan of pepper, so I'd reduce the amount.  1 1/2 Tbsp was more than enough for me.
  • Sun-dried tomatoes would be really good in this.  Peas would also be a nice bonus.
  • I bet the amount of butter could be reduced by at least a stick.
